Good morning once again. As mentioned in the earlier post, some snow has fallen at the school but only a small amount of accumulation has taken place. The school is OPEN.

Please drive carefully in the lanes near the school. Parents, please ensure that your children are wearing sensible shoes.

UPDATE AT 7.40am - I have been told by people just arriving, that Bloomfield Rd is a better option than Hillside Rd when approaching the school.

UPDATE AT 8.15am - Please be careful on Kinsbourne Green Lane. Apparently going is generally good, which lulls one into a false sense of security as there are some icy patches!

Thanks to all who made the difficult journey to school this morning. I understand that the local roads were not gritted and that driving was difficult. The current available weather reports are not reflecting the actual weather that we have been experiencing, but I trust that they will be accurately updated.

The Year 7 parent consultation planned for this evening has been postponed. A new date (29th March) has been reserved.

I will post tomorrow morning (if there is still snow around).

Good Morning! The current snow situation has caught us unawares! The BBC Weather site (on the net) forecast heavy rain for today, and that forecast was still in place at 6am this morning. The TV forecast now has us getting up to 6cm of snow. There is a substantial snowfall at the school as I write and it is accumulating. School is open, but please use your discretion with regard to travelling and monitor this site for further developments.

The snow forecast for this postcode (on the BBC website) has been downgraded to sleet at lunchtime with the possibility of light snow mid afternoon. Please keep an eye on this site through the morning, as we will post information should conditions deteriorate. We lie on the edge of the area expected to have some snow and it may miss us altogether, or we could have some settling.

Wednesday Morning 20th January - 12.30 am

There are conflicting snow forecasts for Harpenden. The BBC website forecast for this postcode has us receiving snow at lunchtime, while the regional forecast places our chance of having snow at just 20%. There will be no disruption of the morning's GCSE exams under any circumstances - they will take place. Please watch the forecasts and check this site through the morning should the chance of snow increase. I will update again at about 6.45am.

Thursday 14th January 2010

The King's School and the Highfield Preschool will be open for 'business as usual' until further notice.

Pupils are to return to wearing standard uniform and school shoes. If a pupil has to walk through areas that are 'slushy' on their way to and from school, they may bring 'wellies' to change into, but school shoes are to be worn during school time.

Update - Wednesday 11.15am

The school is open and functioning. My thanks to staff (and parents and pupils) who made heroic efforts to get here!
The school will be open until normal closing time, but parents who have to make long return journeys and are worried about late afternoon traffic may collect their children from 2.30pm. Please contact the office if you intend to collect your child at 2.30pm so that they can be warned to expect you.

There will be no Dawn Kids rehearsal this afternoon.

A dusting of snow has fallen on the school overnight and very light , wet snow is falling at the moment. The forecast is for the light snow to fizzle out at lunchtime.

The King's School and the Highfield Preschool will be open today.

Parents are asked to excercise caution and discretion when travelling. Pupils are to be in uniform with sensible, water resistant shoes with good traction (not fashionable suede boots that get soggy!). Please make sure that pupils have their coats.

Update - Monday Morning 11th January 2010 - 6.15am

The King's School and the Highfield preschool will be open on Monday 11th January 2010

A small amount of additional snow has settled overnight. As at 6am the Herts police were not reporting any road problems, but parents are asked to drive cautiously on all roads. By yesterday evening, most of the roads near the school had begun to thaw (still quite a bit on Ambrose Lane between Bupa and Cooters End), but with the small amount of additional snow, it may again be best to avoid Cooters End. Please drive carefully on the school site and on the Highfield Oval, as there is still snow on the ground.

I have decided that pupils may, once again, wear non-uniform clothing suitable for very cold weather. Sensible, water resistant shoes with good traction are important.

Friday 8th January 2010 - 6.30am

The King's School and the Highfield Preschool are open today.

Parents are to use their discretion if they believe it is unsafe for their children to travel to and from school.

Please note the following important points;

1. Travel - the side roads and lanes around the school have not been gritted -please drive with great caution. I would not recommend the use of Cooters End Lane unless you are driving a 4x4, and more nervous drivers may also wish to avoid the steep climb up Bloomfield Road.
For those using the M1, the lanes from Junction 9 through Kinsbourne Green are likely to be very slippery and the main roads from junction 10 are probably a safer option.
The road from Caddington to the A1081 was closed at 1am this morning and this will probably remain shut.
The stretch of road from Bupa to the school is very slippery (especially as you turn into the school gate) and the school driveway and parking areas still have the original snow from Tuesday evening on the ground. Please be very careful and considerate of others! Drive VERY cautiously on both the school site and the Highfield oval as there is still a lot of snow on the ground.

2. Uniform. For today, pupils need not wear uniform but may wear clothing suitable for very cold weather. Sensible shoes, water resistant and with good traction are important. Girls are to note that make up and accessories are still not allowed and their hair should still be clipped back out of their faces!

3. Snow is forecast for the late afternoon -Please do not be late to collect your child!

Update: Decision about Friday will be made in the morning.

We would like to open tomorrow if conditions permit. The current forecast does, however, indicate possible snow overnight and more again tomorrow afternoon. I have just stopped typing to watch the regional forecast which indicates very low temperatures in rural areas and the warning that gritting is not very effective after about -8 degrees. We will keep monitoring the situation and I will post again in the morning with a decision (Hopefully by 6.30am).

The King's School and the Highfield Preschool will be closed on Thursday 7th January.

Subsequent to the previous post it has become evident that adverse weather conditions in the morning will make travel treacherous and that further snowfall is possible in the area in the course of the day. Advice to schools has been to stay closed.

Wednesday evening 6th January 2010 - 18.45

The school and surrounding lanes have had about 15cm of snow today and we are forecast to have a minimum temperature of -5 overnight, which will cause this to freeze. This is likely to cause travel problems in the morning, but I will not have sufficient information to make the decision about continued closure until early tomorrow morning. I will be contacting the Hertfordshire police and checking forecasts etc in the early hours and will post a decision as early as possible in the morning. Please do not set off to school in the morning before checking the status here - I will post as early as possible.

Please note the following for tomorrow Wednesday 6th January 2010 - The current BBC forecast for our post code is that we will have light snow starting in the early hours of Wednesday morning, becoming heavy by lunchtime. If the forecast remains unchanged I will need to make a decision tomorrow morning based on the forecast (and not on the early morning conditions). We would not want to have everyone coming in to school but unable to get home in the afternoon if traffic is stopped by a heavy fall. I am very much aware of the inconvenience caused by school closures, and will take council and advice before making my decision tomorrow, but it will be a difficult choice if access to the school in the early morning is still viable but expectations for later are for travel disruption. Please be sure to check this site before leaving home -I will try to post a decision as early as possible but by 6.45am at the latest.

Tuesday 5th January 2oo9 - As at 5.45 am there is no snow at Elmfield, but parents are urged to drive carefully as the temperature is below freezing, and the lanes approaching the school are not gritted. There is a possibility of snow later in the day so please keep an eye on weather reports and this site.

The school is open. Although snow did fall and settle last night, we appear to have had some rain after this and the road and driveway are clear. The forecast for the day ahead does not indiate snow, and 3 Counties Radio said at 6am that travel conditions are ok although there is a bit of snow and ice around. Take care and see you later!
